Science Fair

“Everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done” – Robert A. Heinlein
The quote above came to life as we observed Sharaf  Mujtaba Zaman, from class 4 – Yellow, demonstrate his “Home-made Air conditioner” in one of the most anticipated programs of the ITHS Junior Section, Science Fair. It was organized on the 5th of December, Saturday at the Uttara Section of International Turkish Hope School. A combined number of 200 students from grades 1 through 5 worked in groups to execute around 100 projects. The event was attended by Mr. Bedrettin Suata, the honorable Principal of the International Turkish Hope School, and by the loving parents of our students.

The selection phase of the assignment is a crucial stage in the process that leads to a successful Science Fair. It is often seen that students who work on a project they are interested in, enjoy the experience more than when a topic is pre-assigned to them. Therefore, the teachers along with the participating students spent a considerable amount of time discussing their ideas. One of the main purposes of arranging an event as such is to allow the students to go that extra mile in making a real-world connection to the science topics learned in the class.
After careful observation of various projects that were on display, many were seen to deal with the use of green energy such as using solar power to work an oven, hydroelectric power to generate electricity, mechanism of a working turbine, use of bio-energy, coin battery, automatic watering for global bucket, natural fire extinguisher, and many more. While these projects focused on demonstrating effective solutions to eradicate environmental issues, others concentrated on validating existing theories such as invisible glass, bridge building – cables or arches, water cycle, aluminum leaf electroscope, hydraulic elevator, greenhouse effect, electromagnetism, and more. Some of the projects dealt with raising health awareness - effects of cigarette smoke on our lungs, healthy and unhealthy drinks, harmful effect of beverages on our teeth, to name a few. There were several other interesting projects like quicksand, vacuum cleaner, homemade thermometer, tornado simulator, instant snow magic, diffusion thermometer, turbine lights, rocket launcher, balloon jet car, and many more.
The exhilaration and enthusiasm witnessed in students and teachers where further amplified by the interest shown by the parents and other guests. The children seemed extremely eager to demonstrate and explain their project and also answer any query that crossed the observer’s mind regarding their work. In order to add a little more excitement into this event, towards the end, our esteemed judges,  Chemistry, Physics, and Biology teachers from the Senior Boys and Girls Section, selected the top 3 projects from each class and awarded them with exciting prizes. And everyone else was awarded with certificates to acknowledge their hard-work and perseverance.
Events of such importance play a vital role in our children’s lives. These activities give them opportunities to utilize the scientific knowledge they accumulated and imagination to originate ideas that would someday revolutionize the world we live in. But most importantly, students get to practice the art of appreciation and respect fellow teammates’ ideas and opinions while working on their project as a team. We would like to thank our Science teachers, students, parents and everyone involved in making the Science Fair of year 2015-2016 a huge success.
